Journal Project: Browse our print journals by subject

Have you ever wished all of the journals in your field were shelved next to each other, like they are in bookstores, instead of spread out alphabetically by title? This summer, the library launched a project that will allow you to browse the psychology journals, or the nursing journals, or the biology journals, or . . . you get the idea.

As an added bonus, with this new system journals that change titles will be right next to each other instead of separated by the alphabet.

This is not a quick project. First, we figured out what subject (and corresponding call number) should be assigned to each journal. Since May, we’ve been printing stickers with the call numbers and putting them on the journals - all 66,000 volumes! As you can guess, this step is taking a while. Once that is done, we will be able to move all of the journals around into call number order. We expect the journals to be on the shelves by subject by August 2008.

In the meantime, the journals are still shelved alphabetically, just ignore the call number stickers and the journal call numbers in the catalog. If you have any problems or questions, ask for help at any of the library desks, or use the phone next to the photocopiers on Level 2.

Ultimately, people should be able to find and use our print journals more easily. We appreciate your patience as we complete this project.
